The Neighbors Who Drive You to the Appointment |
For more than thirty years, a volunteer coalition in Lindenhurst has quietly handled the rides, meals and bills that come with a cancer diagnosis. Here are three ways to back it before October ends. |

PINK OCTOBER · LINDENHURST
A breast cancer diagnosis comes with a calendar. There are oncology appointments, imaging, infusions and follow-ups, often several a week and often for months. Each one needs a ride, a meal waiting at home afterward, and somebody to deal with the laundry that piled up while you were at the cancer center.
For more than thirty years, a volunteer group in Lindenhurst has been quietly handling that calendar for its neighbors.
The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition was founded in 1993 and still calls itself a grassroots organization. For Town of Babylon residents dealing with breast or gynecological cancer, it offers rides to and from medical appointments, prepared food, house cleaning, financial assistance and more. Its office is at 218 N. Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst. In 2025 it earned a Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid, the nonprofit-ratings service.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the coalition has three things going on before it ends.
1. The garden on Sunrise Highway: last call October 31. If you have driven past Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst this fall, you have seen the pink and teal flags and ribbon bows at the southeast corner of the park, at 200 East Sunrise Highway. That is the coalition’s Vision of Hope Garden. A $10 donation puts up a ribbon streamer in honor or in memory of someone affected by breast or gynecological cancer. The garden comes down at the end of the month, so this is the last stretch to add a name. Call 631-893-4110.
2. Monday: the first-ever BBCC Golf Classic. On Monday, October 26, the coalition holds its 1st Annual Golf Classic at Bellport Golf Club, rain or shine, with breakfast, golf, lunch and a dinner reception. Prizes include a $10,000 hole-in-one challenge. The field is capped at 120 golfers. A single player is $500 and a foursome is $2,000. If golf isn’t your game, dinner alone is $250. Businesses can buy a tee sign for $100 (three for $250) or sponsor a pin flag for $250, and raffle baskets are welcome. With a week to go and a 120-player cap, call before you plan on it: 631-893-4110.
3. A vote that costs nothing, once a day through December 15. The coalition is nominated for FourLeaf Best of Long Island 2027 as Best Charity and Best Nonprofit. You can vote once per category, every day. A nomination like this goes to whoever remembers to come back the most. Vote here, then bookmark it.
Most of what the coalition does never gets a photo. A ride to an appointment or a tray of food left on a porch doesn’t make a press release. It also costs real money, week after week, and the money comes from the people who live here.
If you are newly diagnosed, or you love someone who is, the number is the same: 631-893-4110. If you aren’t, the cheapest way to help this month is a $10 ribbon or a daily vote.
Also in Pink October around the Town: the Amityville Teachers Association Trunk or Treat and Breast Cancer Walk, Sunday, October 25, 10 a.m., James A. Caples Memorial Park; and a tote bag craft for Breast Cancer Awareness at the Wyandanch Public Library, Thursday, October 29, 7 p.m. Neither is a coalition event.
