The Suffolk County Marathon begins in the Village of Babylon. On Sunday, the man who won it lives just up the road.
Daniel Cameron, 28, of North Babylon, won the 26.2-mile race on Sunday, October 18, in 2:41:59, according to the official results. That is a pace of 6:11 a mile, and it put him eight minutes ahead of the runner-up, Stephen Bienemann of Smithtown (2:50:00).
The course crosses the Robert Moses Causeway and finishes at Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore. Cameron told Newsday he took the lead immediately and kept it.
It was his fourth marathon and his first win, Newsday reported. The results show how far he came in a year: in 2025 he finished seventh here, in 3:04:48. This time he was almost 23 minutes faster, a personal record.
Cameron was an All-American in the 4x800 relay at West Islip High, then stepped away from running through college and graduate school. He came back about three years ago, pushed by his grandfather, Edward Hynes, who ran 29 marathons; they talk after every long run. By day he is a bioinformatician at NYU Langone. Next up: Boston, in the spring.
Two more Town of Babylon runners finished in the top ten: Dean Mauri of Amityville was fourth (2:51:00) and Andy Moncada of West Babylon was ninth (2:58:57).
Football · West Babylon. West Babylon lost 28–19 at East Hampton on Saturday, October 17, the Bonackers’ homecoming. Down 14–0, the Eagles answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jahavi Reyes to junior receiver Jadiel Adames, then a 48-yard interception return by Jacob Almanzar. Reyes pushed in on fourth-and-goal to make it 21–19, but East Hampton scored the last touchdown.
Boys soccer · North Babylon. North Babylon needed a draw against Ward Melville on Monday, October 19, to make the Suffolk Class AAA playoffs. On Senior Day, it won 2–0. Junior midfielder Wildano Jeudy scored both goals and goalkeeper Gianluca Turano kept the clean sheet, Newsday reported. The Bulldogs are 7–5–3 in coach Jack Fengler’s first season and close the regular season at Copiague.
