Deer Park’s school pool is due for a rebuild, and the state is paying a big share of it.

The Deer Park School District is receiving $3 million in state funding to rebuild its swimming pool, Long Island Life & Politics reported on Oct. 24. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the award on Oct. 17 at an event at the Hempstead Fire Department.

The district told families the news at its homecoming celebration, where, the report says, it was met with excitement.

The new money builds on $850,000 that State Senator Monica Martinez had already secured to help bring the pool back into operation. Assemblyman Keith Brown, who announced the award, credited months of work by district leaders and state and local officials. He named Board of Education President Donna Marie Elliott, Superintendent Jim Cummings and the district’s leadership team for pushing the project forward.

What would a rebuilt pool mean day to day? According to the report, it would give students a place for competitive swimming, water safety instruction and recreation, along with employment training for young adults. The facility is also expected to serve families and neighboring communities, not only Deer Park students.

Some things are still unknown: the total cost of the work, how long it will take, and when the first swimmers could be back in the water. The announcement did not say, and the district has not yet posted a timeline.
